Hand(s)

(fols 1ra–109ra, main part) French textualis, s. xiv1, by three different hands, changing at fols 13rb, l. 41 & 62rb, l. 34. The hands are related to those writing in MS. Laud Misc. 348. Corrections and marginalia mostly in the text hands.

History

Origin: 14th century, first half ; France, Northern (Paris?). The manuscript was estimated by ‘Wernherus’ from Erbach (im Odenwald, Hesse) to be sold in Paris, as suggested by the deleted, now in part illegible note at the upper margin of fol. 110v, below the ex-libris inscription of the Mainz Charterhouse, and written in the same hand: ‘[Notand]um est. quod iste liber est [c. six words heavily crossed out: ... Elizabeth [?] de fratribus ... de ...]. et est estimatus. per wernherum | […]m de Erbach filium [...] prout carius vendi [?] posset parisius ad […]’.

Provenance and Acquisition

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: the late 14th-cent. ex-libris inscription at the top centre of fol. 110v: ‘fratrum Cartusiensium prope mogunciam.’ Identifiable as D XIII S in cat. ii.

William Laud, 1573–1645: Ex-libris inscription of Archbp. Laud, dated 1638, at the lower margin of fol. 1r.

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.
